April Chapter Meeting

19 April 2000

Presentation to John and Margaret Williams

This meeting witnessed a presentation to founding members John and Margaret Williams, for their outstanding contributions to the Sydney Chapter through:

  • Instigation of, and long-term dedication to, the PMI Examination Tutorials; and
  • Establishment of the Sydney Chapter web site

Most of the PMPs present at the meeting owed their examination passes to the free coaching and mentoring provided by John and Marg, who have devoted many of their evenings to this cause for the past three years. Sydney's 100+ PMPs are living testimony to the effectiveness of their teaching. President Graham Oliver presented the Williams with a large (and rather heavy) crystal vase as a token of our esteem.

Electricity Infrastructure at Homebush Bay
by: Walter Stefani

The supply of electricity to developments at the Homebush Bay Olympics Site required new electricity infrastructure. The objective was to provide sufficient system capacity to supply unknown loads from road boundaries to development sites without extensive future cable laying, and to ensure enough capacity to supply concessions on the sites (eg, food and drink stands, marquees and rides) after the development was complete. The project required a balance between cost, reliability and visual amenity.

The presentation covered:

  • The development process for the electricity infrastructure in this high profile project
  • The motivators and funding strategies associated with such large infrastructure projects
  • Project management constraints, particularly risk issues, including completion dates, funding, reliability of supply and coordination with other site developments.

Walter Stefani graduated in Electrical Engineering at NSW Institute of Technology (UTS) in 1983. Walter is both Project Director Olympics and Project Director Relocation (Homebush Bay 132 kV powerlines) at EnergyAustralia. Walter, who commenced these roles in September 1997, is responsible for EnergyAustralia’s infrastructure works, required for the 2000 Olympic Games. Prior to this he was on secondment to the Olympic Co-ordination Authority as their Development Manager, Energy and Telecommunications. Walter has also been the Operations Director Olympics since July 1999, having responsibility with another Operations Director for EnergyAustralia's Olympic Games Venue Operations.
